Wat Pho ‘Temple of the Reclining Buddha’ Bangkok

Wat Pho is one of Bangkok’s – and indeed Thailand’s – most famed temples. Named after a monastery in India where Buddha is believed to have lived, the temple is located in the Rattanakosin district near the Grand Palace and is home to more than a thousand Buddha images. The 160 ft long Reclining Buddha is housed here, hence Wat Pho is also popularly known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha.

Wat Pho is also renowned as a center of traditional Thai massage, and is home to one of the earliest Thai massage schools. Plaques at the temple are inscribed with illustrations of massage treatments; therapeutic points and energy pathways known as sen are engraved, with explanations carved alongside.
